KATICI, YOU WILL MANAGE
An exhibition of illustrations from autobiographical book series about childhood and teenage years of gypsy girl Katitzi by the Swedish author Katarina Taikon.
Taikon Katarina was born in 1932 in a tent in the Swedish town of Örebro and only learned to read and write as an adult. Her first book under her Roma name came in 1963 when she was thirty years old. Virtually overnight, Katarina Taikon became a symbolic spokesperson for the Swedish Roma and a leading campaigner for human rights of the Roma minority in Swedish society.
"I'm not saying anything that has not been entered in the records of the United Nations. On the great idea of human rights has come to others. I just want to make all people are treated equally," said Katarina Taikon in an interview broadcast in 1975.
Her autobiographical book series about the brave and indomitable Katici was based on her life between 1969 and 1981 and has won the hearts of readers in Sweden and the world.
"I write about the same topics as polemical books, but in quite a different form. Writing about Katici is an amazing experience, as if enjoying a pancake with whipped cream and ice cream. I receive thousands of letters from children who very well understand that people need a roof over their heads, they need to learn and need to work. Experts only arrive at the same conclusions after many years of research."
In 1982 Katarina Taikon underwent cardiac arrest and fell into a coma. She never regained consciousness and passed away in 1995. Tuesday, July 29, 2014 would have been her eighty-second birthday.
The English translation was published in 1999, the first part of a series of a Katici translation by Vendula Bohuslavova. The Czech edition of the book presents a unique illustration of this book series. The exhibition will also be on display in Brno at the IQ Roma headquarters.
