SOPHIE´S CHOICE / THE CZECH WAY

Lecture of Judith Matyášová within the accompanying events of Arnost Lustig prize, Czech Centre Prague March 21, at 6 pm.

The project  “Sophie's Choice / The Czech Way” documents the lives of 150 Jewish children who left Czechoslovakia in 1939 for Scandinavia. The children had spent three years together in foster families in Denmark before having to flee for  Sweden in 1943. They then lost touch for 70 years. The story of this group of children has never been documented before. Judita Matyášová, a Czech journalist and researcher at the Military Institute Prague, discovered an unknown chapter of the Czech-Danish-Swedish history.

Matyášová decided that this amazing story which has never been documented nor published must be preserved. Now might be the last chance to find them and tell them what has happened to their friends from the wartime they did not see for a long period of 70 years. During her presentation Matyášová will talk about concrete stories of these “kids”, who live in Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden and Israel.
