TOMÁŠ BICAN / LANDSCAPE!
Exhibition of black and white photographs by young Czech author Tomáš Bican. Part of the exhibition is a projection introducing his previous work.
Tomáš Bican graduated from the Prague School of Photography in 1996 and since then has worked as a freelance photographer. He began his career capturing the Prague periphery but later his focus shifted to other places in the world. His work could be divided into several creative phases characterized by the use of different techniques. In his first phase he used high sensitivity film to create the images of Prague for the successful series called The City, for which he received awards from the Praha fotografická and Czech Press Photo contests. The City was presented in the prestigious Václav Špála Gallery in 2006 followed by exhibitions in several European cities. Panoramic photographs taken with the Noblex camera were typical for his next phase.
Landscape! contains twelve large-format black and white photographs taken by the Hasselblad middle format camera. The images for Landscape! were taken in Europe as well as in remote and exotic countries such as India and Brazil. However, they are not documentary images. Tomáš Bican concentrates on the artistic value and his work shifts to abstraction. Landscape! is a loose continuation of The City series and concludes his "square" period.
