DUNCAN HIGGINS / UNLOUD
Czech Centre Prague hosts an exhibition of Duncan Higgins, which was chosen to be a part of the official program of the One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.
Unloud consists of 1600 small format paintings, each a response to a direct encounter the artist experienced on the Solovetsky Islands in northern Russia over the last six years.
The Solovetsky Islands, often referred to as Solovki, are nested in the Onega Bay just 165km from the Arctic Circle. Solovetsky Monastery, founded in the 15th century, was considered one of Russia's most holy sites and a major destination for pilgrims – but it became a place of exile. In the decades following the October Revolution the monastery was converted to one of the first and most brutal Gulag prison camps. Higgins’s adds: “Solovki is a compelling and unique microcosm of concentrated social and political history that touch not only my own, but wider shared histories. It is a place of limits, a frontier or an extreme situation incorporating the climate extremes, geographical extremes, extremes of faith, brutality, beauty and fantasy.”
“The mosaic-like walls of multiple images come across as convincing as documentary fact and as haunting as imaginative fiction.” Robert Clark, unloud, The Guardian Newspaper, UK. November 2008.
Duncan Higgins (1963) has lived and worked as an Artist and Lecturer in Sheffield, England since 1990. Beginning in 1986 his work has been shown in a number of individual and group exhibitions in the UK and internationally. Since 1989 he has been a Senior lecturer in Fine Art teaching in several Art and Design Institutions in the UK. In 2005 he was awarded a three year National Endowment for Science Technology and Arts (NESTA) fellowship awards to explore art in relation to cultural spaces. The fellowship allowed him to take sabbatical leave from Nottingham Trent University School of Art and Design, UK, where he was joint course leader of the BA(Hons) Fine Art programme.
Unload will be a part of the official program of the One World Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.
